Councils Slam Business Rates Plans

Plans put forward by the government to allow councils to retain a share of their business rates has been slammed by a collection of forty six local authorities. These forty six local authorities have stated that they could be disadvantages when service needs suddenly increase.

These proposals were put forward in a formal manner just before Christmas, the aim of this was to make the funding of local governments more transparent. The government had stated that it would set a baseline above which the council could keep the money. This baseline would combine the inflation linked tariffs and top ups to equalise the system.

Although councils are stating that this process could disadvantage those councils that require to increase in a short space of time. A group is calling for the system to be re-equalised every three years.
